Overview

The Winchester Mystery House is a large Victorian mansion famous for its maze-like layout, including doors and stairways that lead nowhere.

History

Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, bought the property in the 1880s and kept building and remodeling it until her death in 1922. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake damaged its upper floors. Popular legends about the house's construction have made it a tourist attraction, though historians dispute many of these stories.

Today

The house is open for guided tours and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
