The Flatirons

Rock formations and open space · Boulder, Colorado

Illustration of The Flatirons

Overview

The Flatirons are huge slabs of tilted red sandstone on the eastern slope of Green Mountain, and the most recognizable sight in Boulder.

History

The rocks were tilted upward as the Rocky Mountains formed. Chautauqua Park, at their base, opened in 1898, and Boulder later protected the surrounding land as open space.

Today

Hikers and rock climbers visit year-round, and Chautauqua Park hosts summer concerts and events.
