Overview
The St. Johns River is the longest river entirely in Florida and one of the few major rivers in the U.S. that flows north. It runs through the middle of Jacksonville to the Atlantic Ocean.
History
The river was a key route for Native Americans, European explorers and steamboats, and Jacksonville grew up at a narrow crossing point near its mouth.
Today
Bridges, the downtown Riverwalk, port terminals and Navy facilities line the river through Jacksonville.
