Overview
The Florida State Capitol is a 22-story tower in downtown Tallahassee that houses the Legislature and the governor's office. In front of it stands the restored Historic Capitol, now a museum.
History
Florida's first permanent capitol building was completed in 1845, the year Florida became a state, and was later enlarged with its striped awnings and dome. The modern tower was completed in 1977, and the old building was restored in the 1980s instead of being torn down.
Today
The capitol complex is busiest during the spring legislative session. Its observation deck on the top floor is open to the public.
