History
Bands such as the B-52's and R.E.M. formed in Athens in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and later acts including Widespread Panic helped keep the scene alive. The 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre are among its landmark venues.
Today
Live music and nightlife fill downtown Athens most nights, with venue security and crowd control a regular part of the scene.
