Overview
The Kennebec River runs through Augusta, past Old Fort Western and the city's downtown.
History
Old Fort Western, built in 1754, still stands by the river. In 1999 the Edwards Dam in Augusta was removed, one of the first big dam removals in the country, and fish returned to the river.
Today
Riverfront trails and parks line the river, and fishing has rebounded.
