Overview
The Berkeley Pit is a former open-pit copper mine more than a mile wide, now filled with deep, acidic water. A viewing stand lets visitors look in.
History
Mining began in 1955 and ended in 1982. When the pumps stopped, groundwater filled the pit, and it became part of a large environmental cleanup.
Today
The pit is a well-known Butte attraction and a site of ongoing water treatment and monitoring.
