Overview

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a Western-themed restaurant and motel in Amarillo, famous for offering a free 72-ounce steak dinner to anyone who can finish it, with its side dishes, within an hour.

History

R. J. "Bob" Lee opened the restaurant on Route 66 in 1960 and moved it beside the new Interstate 40 in the 1970s. The steak challenge, giant cowboy sign and Old West decor made it a well-known stop for highway travelers.

Today

The restaurant remains a popular tourist stop, with a brewery and motel on site and challenge attempts streamed online.
