Overview

Fort Bliss is a U.S. Army post in El Paso whose training ranges stretch north into New Mexico. By land area it is among the largest Army installations in the country, and it is home to the 1st Armored Division.

History

The post began in 1848 after the Mexican–American War, and in 1854 it was named for William Wallace Smith Bliss. It moved several times before settling at its current site in the 1890s. For decades it was a center of air defense artillery training, before that school moved to Fort Sill in the 2000s.

Today

Fort Bliss is one of El Paso's largest employers, and its soldiers, families and contractors shape the city's economy.
