Overview

The Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston is widely described as the largest medical complex in the world. It brings together dozens of hospitals, medical schools, research institutes and support organizations on one campus.

History

The TMC was founded in 1945 with support from the M.D. Anderson Foundation. In 1969, the surgeon Denton Cooley carried out the first implantation of a total artificial heart at the Texas Heart Institute.

Today

Its members include MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann and Baylor College of Medicine. Tens of thousands of people work there and millions of patients visit each year, which makes it one of the largest concentrations of healthcare security work in the country.
