Overview
Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the middle of Oakland, ringed by parks and a walking path. It is one of the city's best-loved gathering places.
History
In 1870 the lake became the first official wildlife refuge in the United States, and it has been a National Historic Landmark since 1963. Its "Necklace of Lights" was first lit in 1925, went dark in 1941 under World War II blackout rules and was relit in the 1980s. Children's Fairyland opened on its shore in 1950.
Today
Joggers, families and events fill the lakeshore, especially on weekends.
