Overview
MacDill Air Force Base is home to the headquarters of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, as well as an Air Force aerial refueling wing.
History
The base opened in 1941 and was named for Colonel Leslie MacDill, an early Army aviator. It trained bomber crews during World War II and later became a center of joint military command.
Today
MacDill is one of Tampa's largest employers. On-base work follows military access and screening rules, and many defense contractors have offices nearby.
